Hi all! I have a 13 week old Westie puppy who I love to little bits, but we're having some issues.
First, successes, because I gotta brag about him to everyone in the world before I go and call him out in front of the internet: He's extremely good at not pottying inside unless it's on the pad (and that's rare - we had a really harsh cold snap last week and he's teeny tiny, so we didn't want him out in sub-zero temperatures). He knows his name, is working on sit, and is a master of the stairs going up and a semi-pro going down. He has absolutely zero food aggression and eats politely, and his manners with other animals (my mom's dogs, his cat brother) are improving all the time.
We're still working on separation issues, bite inhibition, all that good stuff, but... Sometimes when we take him out for potty and play, he gets extremely excited and turns into a tornado with teeth. He sounds like a demon and wants nothing more than to tear apart my feet, hands, and ankles. I try to redirect to an appropriate toy, but it rarely works. He seems to like toys sometimes and other times he has no interest - The only thing in the world that matters is mangling my extremities. I know that biting and chewing and misbehavior is just part of puppydom, and I know that the bite inhibition trouble can be one of the harder, longer lasting issues to deal with when it comes to puppies.
All that said: Today, unfortunately, he got super excited and bit the absolute shit out of me and drew blood. Like... A lot of it. (Don't worry, I got to meet some of the neighbors with blood pouring down my arm and dripping onto the floor in the vestibule of the building, so that made an excellent impression. Winning hearts and making friends out here, eh little man?)
My question is this: Is this normal? Am I doing something wrong as far as redirecting goes? Or am I doing something wrong as far as reading his cues? I know sometimes the wild and crazy feet-shark behavior can be a sign of being overtired, but it seems like it happens more when he's up from a nap. Is it possible he's not napping long enough?
We played a lot this morning, including a pretty long walk (on the sidewalk - he's got 2 of 3 sets of shots, so we're being careful but also want to be sure he's getting out there and seeing the world). He napped off and on for about two hours before we went out this time. I brought him in after this incident and put him in his playpen so I could clean up, then brought him out to do some training and cuddles and then put him back in thinking he might have gotten a little overtired, but it's been over an hour and he's still playing in his playpen or laying down and staring very sadly at me like I've abandoned him forever despite being in my computer chair four feet away.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
