Dog: just turned 1 year old Jack Chi, neutered, 15-20 lbs.

My family is moving soon and we have my good boy coming with us.

I adopted him as a puppy. Potty training him was really hard because of no access to a yard so he currently uses pee pads overnight. He can usually hold it from when I go to bed (11 pm - 12 am) til I wake up at 6:40 am but sometimes he wakes up and potties on them. It’s not great to wake up to sometimes.

When the pads are away during the day, he signals to go outside. he can be left alone at home without someone to take him out and he’ll use the pad just fine, and when it’s daytime out, he will beg to go outside even when it’s cold and raining. So he really is only using the pads after he eats at 7:30 pm.

But I would like to train him to go ONLY outside in the new house. He’s crate trained and I work outside of the home every day so twice a week, he’s in there for 3-4 hours before he gets his daily long walk, playtime, etc. He’s fine and has no accidents. The other days, he goes to a daycare. That wil be changing and he will be at daycare only one day starting January.

Also, he can’t do the crate at night. He will literally cry all night even if I ignore him. I think it’s because I let him sleep with me so much when he was younger. When I was first training him, I would have him crated from bedtime until around 6 for a morning potty walk before snoozing in bed for a bit but he never stopped crying at night.

Any tips on how to retrain him? The pads have worked out in their limited capacity but I would prefer he be outside only.
