This is a whole new level of hard. 5mo puppy broke her leg and may need surgery. Wife is out of town, and I’m starting to crack. Advice welcome.

5mo old supermutt is the sweetest puppy I have ever known. Got so excited to see me last night that she jumped and spun and landed wrong on her back leg. Cried for what felt like hours. By the time I got her to the emergency vet, she was calmed down, wouldn’t put weight on that leg, but was in good spirits - kisses, tail wags, complete sweetheart. 3 hours later (there were some other, bigger, life-threatening emergencies there last night), I decided to just take her home for the night.

Went to Urgent Care first thing this morning and got an xray. Turns out she has a spiral fracture on her tibia, and it may have cracked her growth plate. Going to our vet tomorrow to get a second look.

Now she’s home in a cast and cone, whimpers constantly, will only eat food out of my hand, and panics when I try to take her out to pee. I feel so helpless. Anybody else been through this and/or have any advice?

UPDATE 1: I just wanted to say a HUGE thanks to all of you for the positive, encouraging responses. I was in a tough spot last night, and I really appreciate hearing your stories and recommendations.

UPDATE 2: Just left the surgical vet, and our puppy will not need surgery!! We need to go back tomorrow to get a heavier duty cast put on to make sure her bones don’t move at all, but it seems like things are still in a good enough position that we can just give the bones time to heal.
