The pollution of Mula river due to sewage has resulted in the presence of Chironomidae larvae also known as ‘nonbiting midges’ or ‘bloodworms’ in drinking water, claim citizens of Blue Ridge township situated in Hinjewadi. Speaking with Pune Mirror, Hinjewadi Blue Ridge society resident Vijay Patil said, “The bloodworm eggs grow into larvae which are red in colour. When it starts pouring out with the tap water, you will feel uncomfortable to see worms like specimens in water and food you consume.”

Patil added, “The primary scientific fact is that it possibly might not be very dangerous; it may not cause a serious disease. The second is that we have no idea if they are infected or not; whether they are vectors and if the larvae are diseased, it will pass it on to humans; going by the contaminated condition of the river, it is a possibility.” “People are alarmed and in a panic state. If larvae are swallowed, it will create a health hazard if it is infected. This incident took place a few days ago in apartments of a specific society in the township,” he said. *
