Is it a good idea to get my Masters in Psychoanalysis?
Post Body

Background: I'm a 21 year old college student majoring in English and Philosophy and am entering into my final year now; however, I'm not sure where to go from where I currently am. I am sure about going to graduate school but feel unsure as to where or what to study.

On the one hand, a Masters program at an in-state university in English seems like a reasonable choice due to my background, the possibility for funding such that I would graduate have little to no debt, and its employment prospects relative to other fields in the Humanities. While I certainly enjoy studying critical theory (perhaps slightly moreso than I do the literature itself), I also worry that I might not actually succeed or, worse, fail to find any meaning in it. Then again, perhaps I would succeed/enjoy it but I can't say for sure.

On the other hand, I've developed quite an interest in Psychoanalysis, both as a theoretical model for literary analysis and as a general mode of inquiry. While researching graduate schools, I came across several institutions that offer Masters degrees specifically in Psychoanalysis--something I originally thought was only taught at the post-graduate or doctoral level. However, said programs seem to be quite expensive, out-of-state, and private (which means they offer little to no funding/assistantships). The Training Analysis alone seems like quite the investment. Even still, though I have no doubt that I'd find psychoanalysis a more rewarding pursuit/field of study, I feel rather indecisive.

I guess what I'm really asking, then, is if whether it is "worthwhile" to do the Masters in this field or at a different level with instead my masters in English? If the latter, then, would it even still be possible to jump in at such an advanced level with only what would amount to a limited formal study on the matter?

Thanks.
