Greetings fellow travelers,
I have been pre-thinking for a while now about a theoretical exploration of a particular aspect of the subjective experience of listening to music, namely, how it produces in subjects a non-conceptual experience of emotion, and how this relates to various aspects of psychoanalytic theory, but particularly Object Relations, even more specifically, Bionian ideas about thinking, beta elements, alpha function, etc.
I'm ready to move towards actually gathering and formalizing my thoughts and maybe even making some kind of argument or point (ha). To that end, I'd like to review some psychoanalytic literature about music and particularly how music creates a specific type of experience in the listener. There is absolutely no lack of psychoanalytic literature about music, it is frankly overwhelming.
What are your favorite articles, books, etc. on the subject? What is an absolute must read? I appreciate your suggestions - thank you in advance!
