Vermiculite vs. Perlite or other substrate additives? (Transferring inoculated grain to soil today)
Post Body

Hey guys, first time grower here and have had an excellent experience so far. I am almost ready to move my inoculated grain to soil and pray for fruits!

I’m actually following Gordotek and per those directions, my cococoir needs to be mixed with vermiculite for optimal results. (Not required, but I wanna give these guys the best chance to grow beautifully, and would love to have a first flush before I leave for Bonaroo in 2 wks)

Having issues finding vermiculite that isn’t in bulk ($40 ) and just wondering if perlite or some other substrate additive could accomplish the same goal. I am deep into houseplants as a hobby and have perlite or peat moss available on hand to use. I know perlite will aerate the soil but it also dries the soil more than vermiculite does (based on what I’ve read). Peat moss wouldn’t help aerate, but would help with moisture retention in the block.

Growing Natalensis, if that matters. 🙂

Any input, especially your own anecdotal experience, would be welcome. Thanks!
