Steps to becoming a PM

I am interested in becoming a PM or working towards a career in this.

I am currently in my second year of international business studies in Europe, I am running a start up along side 3 other partners and working part time in a medium sized company as customer service and marketing intern.

I have some experience in coding that I've learned in my own time. I wouldn't say enough to work as a developer but I'm comfortable understanding and looking over code and fixing certain issues.

Do I need to be a developer to be a PM? What steps are most necessary if I want to be a PM?
