Why is King Crimson so underrated/underappreciated?

Post Body

I've always wondered this. In my opinion, King Crimson was the first band to mesh different genres, experimental sounds, complex time signatures and out of the box song structures into a true prog rock experience. Yet I'm baffled at how many prog fans there are that have never even heard of them. I was just discussing prog with someone earlier today, and he could name off almost all of the essential prog rock bands of the 60s and 70s, but failed to name King Crimson. Criminally underrated in my opinion.
