Why did Prolog lose steam?

Haskell is both difficult and easy to understand, depending on which one you're using. There's a ton of language extensions and nutty projects built by some rando PhD candidate who abandoned it immediately after graduation. There's also a really beautiful and concise language that makes it hard to screw up unless you go out of your way to do so.
