I’m hoping this title doesn’t sound confrontational. Rather, I’m curious how many who enjoy prog are actually musicians? Many of the threads that I read on here lead me to believe that a good portion of listeners are musicians themselves. I am not, and have very little rhythm, let alone any actual experience or musical talents. However, I thoroughly enjoy the technical aspects, unusual time signatures, quiet and epic moments, polyrhythms, etc. found in prog(metal)….to the point that it’s taken over most of my listening. What are other’s experiences?
I am an very amateur musician (guitar and vocals only, and if it’s not in 4/4 or 3/4 or a similar equivalent like 6/8 or whatever- I will get lost rhythmically right away and play horribly!) BUT I appreciate prog more than any other genre! Granted, my best friend introduced most of it to me and he’s a lifelong musician and very skilled session drummer- spending tons of time with him listening to all of these albums while he points out things I wasn’t even hearing prior to him highlighting it… that’s been a massive boon, and has improved my listening skills probably tenfold, and therefore significantly depended my appreciation of (many of) these bands. That said, I was deeply in love with bands like Porcupine Tree and Karnivool and Chroma Key long before I improved my listening ability so it’s definitely still for the rest of us, although I agree for the most part that musicians appreciate a lot of facets more deeply, which is a wonderful thing:)
