Looking for metal with big band

Post Body

Hey everyone, not sure if this is the right forum for this, so I'd also appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

I'm looking for a band that combines metal with big band jazz elements (mainly horns).

I'm looking for a band that combines these two elements not just having them both at different parts in the song.

Update: thanks for all the recommendations! I'll listen and keep updating here with thoughts and summaries on the songs for anyone else who might find this forum later.

Moonshine Limbo (Trepalium): Harsh vocals, cool chaotic riffs with sax arrangement. Reminded me of Troldhaugen so if you like one check out the other. They use the horns as accents and transitions most often not as lines. It has a cool bridge bit that seemed to have a clarinet in it too. Most importantly it has the vibe of a big band tune that's been covered by a metal band. Really sounds like a big band metal hybrid.

Roquefort (Karnivool): I generally can't get into Karnivool too much despite my best efforts. The horns worked really well here though. The used the horns to add lines to the song rather than just as accents which I think is a bit of a better integration than using them as accents and transitions which Trepalium does. The trumpet colour is very present throughout the song which is great. Great suggestion for this thread.

Holocene (Ocean): I couldn't hear much in the way horns in this track but it was certainly a beautiful song. They may have used super distorted horn sounds as textural things, which works really well in the song but it's definitely not in a big band swing style. If anyone is looking for a psychedelic ballad with a cello solo though, check this out.

The Wizard (Brownout Presents: Brown Sabbath): as the poster mentions this isn't exactly prog metal (I'd even argue that with the newer definitions of metal, it's not really metal ), but it definitely has super integrated horns! Not my cup of tea personally as I generally don't vibe with old metal too much but I liked how prominent the horns were. It has swing and it has attitude, but I think the sort of straight forward rhythms and harmonies in that era of metal aren't the best place to put big band esque arrangements because that type of arrangement excels at being complex and quick and if you use them to reinterpret a tune that doesn't allow those things they can't shine.

Typewriter II (Panzerballet): anyone who looked up this thread should check this one out. It reminded me of Snarky Puppy but metal. Not exactly big band but the saxophone was very prominent in the song. Sax was trading phrases with the guitar and they had some very crunchy chords thanks to adding the sax, and the typewriter sound was very fun as well. My favourite part was the breakdown at the end. I'll listen to more of their stuff and report back, but if someone is looking for exactly what I wanted (metal with big band) this isn't exactly it, it's more like metal with modern jazz.

A little piece of heaven (A7X): I've known and loved this song for years. Their use of the horns is super tasteful in this song and adds a lot every time it jumps in. Horns are super idiomatically written, they sound like they have their own horny (pun kinda intended considering the lyrics) identity and not just playing metal type things. One of my all time favourites so take my points with a grain of salt.

Liminal (Exivious): I listened to this album a few times all the way through but it was dense so it took me a while to comment on it. I don't see why this album as a whole is referred to as jazz metal. The bass has a bit of a modern jazz sound (I don't have the expertise to figure out what the effects and signal chain are, but it doesn't sound like a metal bass), In Deeply Woven there was a killer sax solo, and Tiguna had a walking bass but other than that, there are occasional jazzy chords with recognisable extensions but it's mostly metal. Especially instrumentation wise, there isn't much that would remind you of jazz. My favourite songs from it were Movement and Deeply Woven.
