I've been degoogled for a while now with a GrapheneOS phone. Recently, I started seeing someone (referred to as A from now on) who uses a Pixel 6 phone. I never really took photos of myself before I met A but A loves taking photos as it's their hobby and I also value supporting their desire to want to take memorable photos of us.
I'm not sure how to approach the topic that I don't like their Pixel phone processing photos of us. I also think it would be a good idea to have some forms of compromise prepared to bring up.
What I've considered:
- Suggest that we take photos of us on my phone. The quality won't be as good and it would also be a restriction on them that I don't want to burden them with.
- Use a standalone camera device. I already know that they like to be able to take photos on their phone freely. Still, I'd be interested to hear what others use that is still reasonably portable.
- Block internet access to GCam with something like TrackerControl on their phone and have them install Simple Gallery. I feel like this isn't good enough though.
- Offer to degoogle their Pixel as well. I can't imagine this discussion going well but I won't discount it as a possibility. GCam would still be usable but it would mean they drastically change the way they use their phone.
If I can't figure out how to deal with this, I'm just going to relax the whole thing and just accept it as a part of our relationship.
How do you approach taking memorable photos?
Edit: Thank you to all the thoughtful answers. I'm reading them all so even if I don't reply, I really appreciate it. 😊
