MPH/Meter Display Not Coming On

Having a hard time finding the answer to this online since answers vary so much...usually in colder weather, and more frequently as of late, the meter display with mph/fuel/distance etc won't come on. MFD is fine, car runs fine. What can I check as possible causes before I take all the time to take it to an over-expensive dealership.
