So I'm doing the head gasket myself
Post Body

Let me start by saying I was a professional and certified mechanic for half a decade. Then built engines for myself for decades.

The mechanics have been giving me estimates around $3k (labor only) for this job. I'm getting older and lazier so I wanted to check prices. I have checked out some videos and this looks to be one of the easier OHC jobs I've tackled. I'm replacing the EGR valve and cooler, intake manifold, PCB, injectors, timing chain (kit), thermostat, and I'm using a MLS head gasket kit. I'm at 200k~ and am feeling like I should pop a new water pump on it too. Anything else I might want to consider with this job?

I’m considering doing this if it ever comes to it. But I’ll likely do an engine rebuild and make it all nice and new before I put it in. 🙂
