Hello all!
My mom is looking at a 2012 Prius. I know the third generation is the one with the most head gasket problems, but I wanted to see if the 2012 is a bit better off.
Alternatively, what years of Prius would you recommend? I understand all Prius’ need maintenance, but if there are years that are easier to maintain than others, I’d like to keep an eye out to purchase.
Thank you!
I’ve owned a 09-10-11-12
09: 160k-193k touring model, constant problems, some parts were expensive, not as comfortable, not as good fuel economy.
10: 140k-190k series III despite the “oh it’s an early gen three, it’s only going to burn oil!” Only ever burned maybe half a quart between changes. Extremely reliable, I replaced headlights on it once, no other mechanical issues.
11: 89k-163k series 5, all packages, OEM LED headlights are incredibly bright never going back from them, never burned a drop of oil, lane keep assist is garbage, but adaptive Cruise control is a must never going back from it, 17 inch wheels look nice, blizzard white pearlescent, better fuel economy then the 10, replaced both rear hub bearings that went bad. no other mechanical issues.
12: 167k-209k (so far) Plug-in Advanced, all packages, OEM LED, Adaptive cruise, best purchase yet, synthetic leather is really nice, baby blue color is amazing, range is about 10-12 miles, flew across the country to buy her, doesn’t burn a drop of oil, water pump was on the way out, replaced that and the thermostat since I was in there, one bad wheel hub bearing, no other mechanical issues.
If I had to replace my 12, id consider a Prime, or a Fith gen prime, as I love the newer looks/new tech. But so far my third gen’s have been fantastic. Unfortunately my last two both got totaled while I was doing gig work and racking up mileage fast. Preventative maintenance was done on all of them, never had a serious issue. I take especially good care of them, and they have lasted me quite well. 🙂
