Hi everyone,
Thanks to all who've responded to students making similar posts recently & the med students who're willing to offer advice. I think we've got a really positive thing going on in our little community.
With that said, I'd like to ask if I stand a chance of an interview when I apply as a graduate student next year.
My stats:
-3.35 cGPA (3.95 2 yr at Queen's, otherwise 3.83 for other 2 yr schools like Western, Dal)
-Writing my MCAT in late August, but my goal is 510-515
ECs:
-3 years at a club revolving around playing chess to provide therapy & companionship to stroke & Alzheimer's patients. I spent my first two years as a general volunteer & this upcoming year will be on exec
-3 years on my school's varsity triathlon team
-3 years as part of my uni's E-sports club (1 year as head coach of our LoL team)
-2 years as a general volunteer in a conservation biology club (maintaining pollinator-friendly gardens, public outreach)
-1 year on departmental student council
-1 year volunteering at a local soup kitchen, 1 year at an animal shelter
-Many humanitarian events over the years (Toronto Street Retreat, teaching at elementary schools in underprivileged communities in Jamaica & Ontario)
Work during uni:
-1 year at a pharmacy
-1 year as an equipment service rep at my university's gym
-Spent the last year with 2 jobs, 1 being a TA & the other as an educational tech assistant (independently taught faculty how to use online learning tools & built their course sites as we transitioned into remote schooling)
-As part of my MSc coursework, I'll be speaking to patients & shadowing
Hobbies:
-Fitness stuff, which includes the running/swimming/cycling of tri, weights, mountain biking
-Chess (I'm not very good but I play regularly & enjoy connecting with people over it)
-Gardening
-Competitive League of Legends (I haven't seen anyone include video games, but I do think there are valuable lessons to be learned if you try to perform at a high level)
-Investing
-Trumpet & piano
Some extra notes:
While my cGPA isn't competitive, I've done the due diligence of making sure I make the 2-yr cutoffs as an Ontario resident to Queen's, Dal, Western, U of A, and could still apply to MUN, U of T, and Mac. I'm wondering how much space is provided at each uni to talk about experiences (both EC-related and in general), as I've had to overcome a lot and learned immensely over the course of my undergrad (nearly dropped out in 1st year due to mental health issues & pushed 80-hr weeks for a while to get the 2-yr GPA I have). I really think I can crush interviews, but I imagine getting there will be quite tricky.
Thank you so much to everyone who's read this far,
Cheers!
