25M who is relativity healthy and thin at 5'8" and 132 pounds. I discovered in late June I had a prediabetes with my A1C at 5.8. I never in my life even knew what A1C was let alone prediabetes was. I asked my family and friends a bunch of questions as well as my doctor and the Internet.
To my knowledge both of my parents have been diagnosed with prediabetes in the past and told me they fixed it (although they don't count nutritional values and my dad eats like a teenager at 60). A friend of mine who is a full diabetic (type 1) told me its easy to reverse and another who is a Muslim girl at my job with type 2 told me many people are misdiagnosed with this. I have another coworker who I am closer to that has been more on me about me this since he used to be 300 pounds years ago. He told me "you're not super young anymore so you either want to set yourself up for success now or fail later". I did not take this with a grain of salt and changed my diet.
The first week I went a bit extreme and did Keto. I probably won't do this again since I like fruit and beans too much and have realized without them I don't shit.
The second and third week I started to eat fruit in moderation as well as beans and other foods with carbs. A lady at a keto bakery told me to stay under 100g of carbs so I figured what types of carbs to add into my diet would make the most sense.
I have not ate any rice, pasta or bread. While I miss these and will see them again I feel better not having crashes and feeling like I can't finish my meals due to the bread filling me too fast or rice making me not eat the rest of my Korean BBQ. Pasta seems to actually be the healthier of the three since I know its not just about carbs or sugar but fiber, protein and fat so I will add this back into my diet soon.
What I am learning about this diet is that it is not all about how many carbs or sugar you are eating (even though it is a big part). Fiber, protein and fats are important and if a high carb food has a one or two of these it is still healthy for you.
My only concern is gaining weight for my bulk this winter since I hate my weight and want to be 145-150 pounds. I feel 100g of carbs is quite low but I know if I'm eating 3000 calories that will be harder to achieve. Is 150 carbs going to reverse what I have going for me? How about 200?
