But hear me out first. I have listened to rock music ever since I was a teenager, for more than thirty years now. I had my phases with hard rock, heavy metal, psychedelic stoner rock, blues rock, punk rock, progressive rock, alternative rock, etc. And all this time, I could remember the songs I like (and they are hundreds of course) by name, band, and probably also by the name of the album, the latter being the unit of music to me; I always listened to albums from start to finish, like a symphony with the individual songs as its movements.
Now over the past year I have become more and more interested in post rock. I think of it as a natural continuation for me, as well as a completely fresh look at music. But I have failed at one thing and it’s really bothering me. I can’t listen to a complete album without feeling a little bored by the repetitiveness of it. So I decided to break the rule, and am building my own playlists that should serve as my personal units of music. But even when listening to these playlists, partly my own creation, I cannot for the hell of it remember which band is playing which track! They all seem to be following the same non-formula, all the same instrumentation, and all (mostly) the same mood.
And I wonder, does anybody else feel the same way?
