Is it possible to get a visa before presenting

I have delivered my thesis, however we don’t have a date settled yet. I’ve been accepted for a postdoc in the USA to start in September, this can be before even me defending the thesis (I’m from eu). I’m worried they won’t accept/continue my application since I haven’t yet presented neither got the diploma.
I was told I would get a J1 visa.
Has anyone dealt with this this issue? Thank you.
