I really liked it, and at one point I had a dreamd--I was practically screaming at my co-workers saying, literally this! Literally this song!
I was at a diesel tech shop, and felt bad because of what diesels are doing to the planet. Didn't last long there.
But basically was thinking, "you know you want it if you leave somebody you love," to mean work. Like, you leave much of the people you love for most of the time to make work, work.
Likewise, it mentions Jesus. And I think of the verses that say, if you do not hate your mother and father in comparison to me, you are not worthy of me.
Thus, the chorus. Kind of pointing to the fact that you really want something when you are willing to leave people you love. But is it really worth it? I see it as calling out how many people leave the oppressed, the vulnerable, those they love, for work in America.
I don't know what went wrong
Or why this feeling's gone
And then into the chorus. Like, you have to abandon your inner child, eventually, or relationships--or most people do--for endless work. And many do this more voluntarily than others, sort of trading emotional honesty or connection for more and more money. Which, as I see it, makes the whole thing hyper-competitive.
Yet, at the same time, the song is very unarticulated. The rap part at the end is moreso. But the chorus seems somehow vague, yet almost too honest at the same time. Much like Heavy Games.
It's like, I want to grasp it but it somehow slips through my fingers. Yet I feel I get the general gist? I just want it to fit nicely, but it doesn't seem to. Not really that common of a feeling with them.
What do y'all think?
This American life
Vanity, such an American vice
I never question how fair is the price
On a pair of sunglasses I'm wearing at night
Face it, we've wasted our youth on the young
Pray for the taste of the truth on the tongue
Rather than taking my place in the pattern
I'm chasing the dragon, I'll live on the run
Nearly departed from where we had started
To where we have come is the eeriest part of it
Scary, the theory of one is the heart of a
Judgment free zone so it's crazy to feel this alone
[Bridge: Portugal. The Man]
Ain't nobody home
Ain't nobody home
Ain't nobody at home
[Chorus: Natalie Lafourcade]
You know you want it if you leave somebody you love
You know you want it if you leave somebody you love
You know you want it if you leave somebody you love
You know you want it if ya (Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo)
I think it's talking about the emotional abandonment many of us face/experience to make life in this world work. Sad, dark, existential, awkwardly articulated. Too raw. Like much of this album. I love the sound of it, it gets caught up in my head.
