So in her new song Aquamarine, she decides to take the opportunity to discuss a variety of complex matters. Firstly the lyrics āThe world is my oyster baby come touch the pearl the world is my oyster and Iām the only girlā exposes the cruel nature of the modern day pearl industry. Sheās saying that if overconsumption of pearls continues, then sheāll be āthe only girlā wearing pearls because the oysters producing pearls may become extinct. This sentiment of overconsumption is echoed in the lyrics āgive me moreā and the fact this lyric is repeated highlights how not only do regular people want more, but so do companies.
Next, the lyric āIām dancing in my own reflectionā is Addison trying to warn us about climate change because sheās dancing in the reflection of water from extreme floods. This is further emphasised by the fact that she is āswimming in the sea with the salt in [her] hairā. The fact that sheās ākissed by the sunā is her firstly warning her listeners of the dangers of the sun especially when combined with āIām the ray of lightā is her warning us of the dangers of global warming.
Third, āIāll take you with me high, high, high, highā is her discussing how climate change has affected avian migratory patterns.
āIām not hiding anymoreā āI wonāt hideā and āIām freeā is her telling us that sheās no longer afraid to speak out about the injustices that Mother Nature experiences at the hands of humans.
She chooses to personify herself and take on the role of these different types of disasters because it helps create a more intimate connection between us, the listeners of Addisonās message, and climate change.
Finally, she chooses to impart some of her knowledge onto us and implies that not only is it necessary to be educated on climate change and nature, but also that we need to be educated in maths. āIām transforming and realigningā is her teaching us about matrices. Sheās teaching us that itās ok to make mistakes in maths and for example, if the matrix transformation you applied to a point in 2D space hasnāt given the desired result (maybe you wanted to rotate the point about the origin for example), then you can transform the point again in order to realign it and try again. The reason itās necessary for her to flex her mathematical wisdom is so that we are more likely to pay attention to her message because we will then perceive her as sage.
okay!
