The broader point Iâm making is what you said, that people are so eager to cancel someone over a simple mistake. Context matters. She clearly wasnât aware it was a slur, and it went through all the levels of her labels approval and released before anyone caught it. Besides, Cardi B has a song where she uses the âcrazyâ and the r word. Thatâs out there right now. And people arenât cancelling her.
Fair point, but I think context matters here. Sheâs referring to herself in the lyric. Like you, I did not realize it was a slur, and would argue that neither did she. I applaud trying to not offend anyone and changing the lyric, but if there was no malicious intent, contextually the lyric is fine in my mind. People shouldnât feel the need to go through life walking on eggshells and trying not to upset anyone. It just isnât possible. If you zoom out from this tiny problem, a larger point can be made in favor of things like censoring books in school that talk about slavery because itâs offensive to white children. Or threatening parents with CPS because they took their children to a drag show. Itâs going so hard progressively that weâre teetering on coming back around to conservative viewpoints. Basically I think a vocal minority, in this instance, should think about not being so sensitive to a pop song about your girl crew.
Check her Twitter feed sometime. People are a lot more aggressive, telling her to change the lyric and apologize. Again, there are loads more offensive lyrics by other current artists out there. Expecting an artist you like to remove lyrics you deem offensive from their music is completely over the top. Tune her out, fine. But you canât agree with everyone all of the time. Lucky for her listeners she listens to them and is trying to be respectful and inclusive, but getting upset over a word taken out of context is too aggressive in my opinion.
I agree, that was my understanding of what it was short for
Let the downvotes fall, but I agree so much with that. Going so far on the woke culture that itâs circled around to the other side. I consider myself pretty damn progressive but it makes me realize why conservatives call liberals snowflakes. Society progresses naturally, but we shouldnât forget that in a democracy, people are allowed to have differing opinions that are welcome to be debated. But cancelling someone for not aligning with the social zeitgeist 100% of the time is purely anti-democracy and unamerican.
Cardi used the words Crazy and the R word in one of her songs. Kinda ridiculous of you ask meâŚ
Exactly. She made an error and corrected it. But there are other artists out there using vastly more offensive language in their music, and people arenât shouting from their keyboards to cancel her. That is a massive bullshit double standard that should give lots of people pause to consider why Lizzo is getting so much flak for a mistake. And contextually, it wasnât used offensively. Free speech is a thing in America, or at least used to be. People have a right to be offended by those words, but in this instance, I think itâs a bit extreme
Itâs a big deal because the word is used in the NBA constantly and no one is shouting at them about it. Itâs a massive double standard. You can choose to look the other way on that bullshit double standard, but this points to a larger problem with society. Thatâs my point. But whatever, it was an easy fix. She remedied it and didnât have to apologize. Good for her

Apparently the word âspazâ is considered derogatory. Personally I think in the context used in the song, it isnât offensive but whatever. Good for her
