Imagine I’m a successful artist, and for my second album I want to work with a bunch of successful songwriters. I’d love to work with Max Martin and Shellback, or with Justin Tranter. My label is able to hook me up with them and schedule in one? multiple? songwriting sessions.
Do these songwriters usually get paid per songwriting session, per finished song, or per released song? What’s the most common structure, and are there any artists/songwriters who have very unique ways of working?
I have worked in the industry 10 years. It’s mostly all on spec. What this means is that they don’t make money unless a song they write or contribute to makes the album cut. Same with producers. Sometimes writers/producers spend days/weeks/months on a song only for it to get cut from the album. But one placement, especially on a popular artist’s album can make up for all the cut material. The caveat to this is big producers who take a fee to even work on something with an artist.
