Is there any chance of getting water clear/less murky in a literal hole in the ground?

Post Body

Partner's dad has a big hole on his ranch that he dug out with an excavator a long time ago, somehow fish and turtles appeared but the water looks "hella nasty" according to her. I know nothing of ponds, closest thing I got is an aquarium lol. Anything we could do help clear up the water? Literally hole in the ground, no pond liner, no plumbing, just big hole on the ground and has fish
