My family includes me, my husband, our 2 kids, our girlfriend and her 2 kids. I work as a caregiver for the elderly and they like to chitchat. I'm often asked if I'm married and whether I have kids. I feel comfortable mentioning things about my husband because that's the legal heterosexual socially acceptable relationship. When people ask how many kids I have lately I've just been saying 4. We all see all the kids as ours. It feels minimizing to call my girlfriend's kids my step kids. I end up calling our youngest daughters twins because they're only about 6 weeks apart. But that's not exactly the truth. I live in California so it's not too conservative but polyamory is not a protected class. How do you handle this topic at work or with other acquaintances you're not out to?
