Practical advice - How did you determine what you needed in your house?

Looking at a house for a triad (and possibly future quad?) and a child (with room for 1 or two more?)
How did y'all figure out what you needed out of a house? So far in browsing I am exploring duplex/quadplex options but a single family home with enough doors and bedrooms could work too. I feel like given the unique family structure the options out there are limited.
