When was the last time the US Department of Defense was used defensively?

I was thinking about the renaming of the "War Department" in 1949 and thought it a little ironic that, in my mind, that seems like the last time the Department was used in a clearly defensive role. I'm probably wrong, though, and invite your thoughts.
