I think kids need to be able to read cursive. Many originals of historical documents are written in cursive. Kids should be encouraged to read what these folks actually wrote rather than what the folks on the news say about documents they haven't read but want to claim to be experts on.
Writing in cursive, however, is no longer necessary for most folks.
