100 years ago, on 6th of december 2017, the Perkele country gained Independence!

Today we are celebrating Finland's centennial, and everything white and blue is considered fashionable. We can't go outside on a gloomy day like this; better stay at home and enjoy a cup of coffee while watching the president shaking hands for hours on the TV.

While at it, feel free to soothe your eyes with the aurora borealis dancing above the Finnish wilderness in its mystic grace (drawn by u/colossa) while several depictions of the country's history are being presented. After the opening (1. pic, u/colossa) you'll see the end of the Russian civil war, where an empire fell and a new one rose on its place, giving a small nation a chance to become a state among others, though not without a bloody civil war (2. pic, u/colossa). In 1939, the bloody Winter War began, followed by the Continuation War and the Lapland War, all of which had a traumatic effect on the country that hadn't even been properly insustrialized and was unsure of its future. But there was still hope (3.pic, u/hulibuli).

During the Cold War, the westernised-but-without-a-clear-direction Finland was balancing between the star-spangled west and the red bear of the east. Compromises were made, diplomacy occurred, and saunas were heated as leaders discussed the future of the pesky Finnish turf (4. pic, u/colossa). In 1975, for the first time in history, the two giants of the known world sat at the Finlandia Hall in Helsinki. Here, the neutral ground proved its effectiveness and no fists were shaken (5. pic, u/colossa).

We Finns are known for our cold nature and respect towards one's personal space (6. pic u/colossa), though we also love our nature dearly (6. pic, u/colossa). In fact, it has become a modern tradition for the Finns to watch a live stream of a seal lying on a rock every summer. That's how modern we are, you would think that the distant and dangerous Finland would know about the marvels of technology, (7. u/sitoutumaton and 8. pic, u/colossa). Through the internet we have managed to make ourselves known to the world, and even attract tourists, who come from far and wide to enjoy are local delicacies, such as reindeer and bear (10. pic, u/colossa).

You, too, are very welcome to visit our humble swamp of a home, where grass is greener and snow more yellow, where winning (against Sweden) matters more than anything else (11. pic, u/asteh), land set for the future (12. pic, u/sitoutumaton). As I said earlier, today up here in the north we are celebrating that country.
