Ive been here just for a few weeks because I'm doing a semester abroad and so far I've only had negative experiences âšī¸ My first issue was with my landlady. Despite paying 3100zl(!) for my small apartment, the heater isn't working properly. When I tried addressing this with her, she just ignored me and didn't care. Something like this has never happened to me before.
I've also encountered quite a few challenges with people in public service roles, like those at shops. When I approach them with simple questions in English, their response has often been a blunt "I can't speak English" or just "No." before walking away. Even if the worker is my age.
My first visit to the doctor's office was another shocker. Since I didn't have my pesel number yet, the receptionist badly scolded me for going to the there without it. Unfortunately, she didn't give me the chance to explain that I had just arrived in Poland and didn't get it yet. Throughout the process, she openly sighed and rolled her eyes at me making the entire experience unpleasant (government workers also do this).
In general I just noticed a lack of friendliness among strangers. It seems like people here never smile at each other, and there's a noticeable openness in displaying arrogance and annoyance. It's disappointing because, as someone from a Slavic country myself, I was genuinely excited about trying out the cuisine, and learning the polish language, which I find complex and interesting.
But so far, it seems like being a clueless foreigner with not the best polish skills is met with hostility and no understanding or empathy. Is it worth still staying in Poland? Am I maybe just seeing all this from a wrong perspective? I would appreciate y'alls perspective on this âēī¸
