Okay, so u/jabuloso has covered Uranium's dragons, Inflagetah, and Yatagaryu Coatlith as a combination so far. I've been waiting for him to finish the dragons portion before posting this.
The Nuclear type, as you probably know, is super effective against every type except for steel and itself, but weak to every type except itself and poison. This makes it an incredibly high risk, high reward typing, and one that's usually worth taking. This has a dangerous effect on every pokemon with the type, either making them incredibly OP or stupidly weak, though the Nuclear moves a pokemon has access to will also have an effect on how good they are. Let's take a look at some of them, shall we?
First off: the corrupted Nuclear pokemon. Arbok, Gliscor, Barand, Tanscure, and more have all been affected by the radioactive energy leaking off from the various power plants, and made these pokemon feral and disobedient (they won't listen to you 100% of the time in battles until you've beaten the story's climax). Some of them have great potential, but others are sorry excuses for Nuclear types. Three of them even have Megas that keep the new typing! Here are some of the more notable ones (ie the ones with megas):
N-Gyarados is pretty sorry for a Nuclear type, tbh. Nuclear is a kill or be killed type, but N-Gyarados's only damaging nuclear move is a special one rather than physical. Kinda kills its usability, tbh.
N-Arbok runs into the same issue as N-Gyarados.
N-Baariette however, does not. It comes with Nuclear Slash, and that's incredibly dangerous on its mega. Or even on normal Baariette. But...
...there's another, far more limiting catch with all of these corrupted mons. They can't breed atm, with the exception of the 3 Nuclear mons you can catch on Route 7 after the 3rd gym. And those mons currently produce normal versions from their eggs, rather than corrupted ones. So getting corrupted Nuclear mons with good IVs is gonna be a bit like winning the lottery at this point in time if you don't resort to hacking...
Second: Semi-Natural Nuclears. I call them semi-natural because they come with the same mechanical restrictions as the corrupted ones, but can only be found as Nuclear types. These mons are Geigeroach and Xenoqueen. They also get the benefit of learning nuclear type moves through level up, unlike the corrupted mons. This also means they can learn more powerful Nuclear type attacks, such as a Nuclear variant of Explosion or Overheat. Scary stuff when used properly, but again, the inability to breed currently kills their usability for all but hackers...
Finally: The Natural Nuclears. These are the most dangerous ones of the bunch in theory. They are the only Nuclear types that are intended to not carry the feral and disobedient natures of the other Nuclear types. They are Urayne, Hazma, and Nucleon. Urayne is the unbreedable title legendary, so good luck getting one with good IVs. Hazma and Nucleon are both breedable though, so let's take a closer look at what they do.
Hazma has some good bulk based on stats alone. 106 HP, 88 def, and 92 Sp def. If it weren't for that Nuclear typing, it'd actually be a decent wall. Which is a shame, because it also happens to be one of only two usable hazard cleaners in Uranium's current version, carrying Defog as a level up move (Raffiti is the other one. Uranium is in dire need of better hazard removal...). Hazma was designed with anti-Nuclear in mind, but I don't think it was executed very well in the end. Nuclear types can run one or two Nuclear moves, and then the rest can be coverage for the few things that can wall those, the Steel and Nuclear types. This is bad for Hazma because it's weak to EVERY form of coverage, so it can't even counter Nuclears despite its Lead Skin ability (an immunity to nuclear, which Geigeroach also has) and its signature move, Expunge (the only Nuclear move that deals super effective damage to Nuclear, and the second most powerful Nuclear move to boot). Its offensive stats also sit at a shameful 54/66/44, so Hazma is effectively good at nothing in the end. Can't wall anything, can't really nuke well... Blegh.
Nucleon, however, is essentially the only usable Nuclear type in the game right now. More than usable, actually. It's bordering on ban territory. Why? Well, first of all, it's got an incredible 115 Sp. Atk backed up by an above average 90 speed. And those are the only stats it needs, because it's not going to use its 55 atk or somewhat decent bulk very much (unless it's using Quick Attack or Return). Second, its ability, Atomizate, turns all of its normal attacks into Nuclear moves and buffs their power to boot (basically a Nuclear version of Pixielate if you're familiar with that ability). This makes Nucleon terrifyingly strong against practically everything.
Now, before I continue, read, or at least skim, this please.
Now, why did I have you read that? Well, if you know what Uranium's pokedex looks like, you probably understand why already. If not, don't worry, I'll explain it here.
Don't see the problem? A grand total of 6 fully evolved pokemon take less than neutral damage from a Nucleon using a 'normal type' move. Six, and only two of them are usable (Nucleon and Gararewl. N-Actan doesn't exactly count either). And Nucleon can handle them all plus all of the Steel types that would take neutral from Nuclear, with just one or two additional coverage moves. Nothing can switch in on it for fear of taking an incredible amount of damage or just getting outright KOed. It is a pokemon that has to be purely revenge killed.
And that means it falls under the category of pokemon that can only be 'checked', as it has no true 'counters.' Pokemon with no counters in Smogon tiering systems tend to get banned. The little guy is a monster. A cute monster, but a destructive one nonetheless. Atomizate turned an okay nuke tier attacking type into a godly one, and it has just enough speed to make a Choice Scarf set work against most everything and annihilate basically the entire metagame with 1 move. When a Nucleon switches in safely, something is going to die.
Personally, I don't think Nucleon is healthy on the metagame. I don't think Nuclear is healthy on the metagame in general thanks to the few mons who really shine with the typing. It ends up being too centralizing. Either every team has a few ways to deal with Nuclear types, or they lose as soon as those Nuclear types come out. Team compositions become rigid and stale to accommodate such strategies, and we end up with a situation like the VGC 2016 season, where every top team is essentially the same at their cores, rather than more Smogon like tiers and a ton of team variety.
Okay, rant on Nucleon over. Now, you're probably also thinking, 'Where can I catch these incredibly OP mons?' Well, this link can help you with that. Do note that the majority of corrupted ones are limited in availability, so you might want to catch them while you still can.
And now, what do you all think about the Nuclear types and their effect on the meta? Let's hear those thoughts, as this is a discussion, after all. :P Some questions to consider:
Should Nucleon be on the receiving end of the ban hammer?
Are Nuclear types, as they are currently, in general, too strong for the meta? If so, should they all be banned from the normal meta as a result? Or should some sort of restriction be placed on them instead in the normal meta?
What kind of a meta could non-restricted Nuclear types do well in without completely destroying it?
Should missable nuclear mons become obtainable through another method once the areas they appear in have been cleared? If so, should they appear in a new area or the one they appear in normally after a certain point in the story has been cleared?
Should corrupted Nuclear pokemon be able to breed once tamed? If so, should they produce normal or nuclear variants of the pokemon? The semi-natural ones should be able to breed eventually, tbh, since they're unique species and all...
