Is there a change in the timing the defender uses its special move?

Assuming a [2 purple bar] attacker (ie. dragon pulse/body slam etc)
With constant attacking right from the start, I thought normally I was able to use my two full bars special move and get close to second round of two full bars before the defender uses its special move, but i notice now it's almost right after my first two bars are full that the defender uses its special move instead of closer to the fourth? Am i imagining stuff? =/
