gym error message? help a poor, frustrated player out

everytime (and i do mean every) i try to battle a gym, i get an error message. BATTLE 1, GO! then immediately: error. this is a continuous thing. no pokes are switching, i haven't moved or lost service, the gym hasn't been taken already, nothing.
i've tried logging out and back in, deleting the app and reinstalling it, turning my phone off and back on (hey, it might work) and even the classic closing of the app. does anyone know how to fix this?
