So today I documented all 8 character colors (6 of which are seemingly never seen?) in Pokemon Crystal. (Gameshark codes included)

So today I found and documented the 8 available player / character colors available in Pokemon Crystal.

I had initially done the character color swap glitch, but after Azalea town, it undoes the glitch. As I wanted to maintain the color pallet on my physical cartridge, and I was using an Analogue Pocket, I proceeded to move the save state over to a ROM on the same system, then use that to generate a save file. I then moved that SAV file to my PC, renamed from .sav to .ss0 to use in mGBA, and began tweaking the memory addresses.

Massive shoutout to Icehawk78 on this forum which found and listed the character color memory address among others. I converted the memory address to a "Gameshark code" and proceeded to test out variables from 00 through about 12 before finding that 00 through 07 are individual colors, then repeating between red and blue for variables after.

The colors I discovered are as follows:
00 Red
01 Blue
02 Green
03 Brown
04 Orange
05 Full Greyscale
06 Full Green
07 Full Brown

When added to the code 01XXDCD4 you can load a different color pallet onto your character.

I haven't yet, as of writing this, moved it back to the cartridge through means of Analogue Pocket save states, but I intend to do so right after. I'm happy to say that I may have the first copy of Pokemon Crystal with a green character, also running on the physical cartridge.

I hope for anyone else who is a huge fan on gen 2, as I am, enjoys this neat little bit of information left in the game. While I'm unsure if all colors were meant for in-game use, considering there are 5 seemingly-normal pallets (which doesn't change skin tone), I'd wager it was either planned to have character customization, they were testing color options before choosing red/blue, or there may have been plans of some form of multi-player coloring?

Either way, very cool, and neat to find after 22 years since release!

Thanks for your awesome find and mark on history, Icehawk78!

Edit/P.S.: Merry Christmas everyone~!
