Good advice for a newbie?

New to MMO's, but grew up playing the series since I was younger; I even get to go back and play some games I'd never touched before! (FRLG, HGSS) Are there any bits of advice you can throw my way as I get started making my way through the 5 games? Any mons to prioritize? Regions? Secret hacks that wouldn't be obvious?
