Would a couple of PO's make a good Xmas present for my kid? Details inside.

My son is 9. He seems to have some natural musical ability that I'd love to foster, but hasn't had any musical training other than a few guitar lessons. I'm thinking that a PO or two could make a great Xmas gift, but I have a couple of questions.
- Are these machines too complex for a young beginner?
- Are there one or two that would be good to start with?
I'm wide open to non-PO suggestions, too. Thanks!
