The one plot hole in Harry Potter that truly irks me.

I can usually ignore things that don't truly ruin stories. But to me this is actually just irks me. In book one we learn about a curse on the gringots bank vaults, designed to kill those "who takes what is not theirs." Later in the book we discover that voldemort attempted to rob the bank, but the vault was empty. Now we can make two assumptions about that, either voldemort was powerful enough to circumvent the curse, or technically it would be Quirell was technically stealing it and voldemort didn't care if he died..maintains established lore.

In book seven they make a plan to break into the bank, get reminded about the curse, and decide to just destroy the cup inside the vault. A good plan that is lore complient. However things go wrong, so they grab the cup and flee the bank, therefore taking what was not theirs, and absolutely nothing happened as a result.
