Can I play with a friend 1v1 or PvE Coop?

Can I choose who to battle from my friends list or is just random matchmaking? I was playing with my friend account only singleplayer but I thought on buying the game to play with him (I know the deal is over, I'll wait for next deal or get it as a birthday gift) but I'm scared I wont be able to choose him as oponent. Also, is there PvE? Like we are 2 factions and fight against the others or we are the same faction... something like that
