Hello, I am looking into a career as a pipefitter. Kind of looking for some advice, some opinions, anything really. I would be a 5th generation after my father. I have absolutely no experience but I would definitely be committed to learning the craft. My previous work experience is customer service and sales, I’ve worked plenty of high stress service jobs and I’m really over it moving forward. I really want to feel like I can take pride in my work and that it actually means something. Mu main reasoning as well for this shift in my life is that I just had a daughter last year and I need to support my family. I’m not a single mother but my partner does not make enough at this time to support us. I’m not weak but I’m not strong, I have a high tolerance for pain mentally and psychically but I’m definitely smaller and frail. I have concerns about potential health issues from the job but I’ve convinced myself if i take the correct precautions I can protect myself. I live 25 min out of the city in NJ going to be looking for NYC work. Am I completely in over my head or is this something that I should go for? I’m trying hard not to discourage myself.
3rd year 638 apprentice here; i married a fitters daughter and kind of fell into a generational family of fitters- albeit i’m a tall dude and in good shape, the job can be done by almost anyone either with strength or with wit, you just have to have the endurance. definitely apply, i’ve met plenty of women fitters and was even trained on my first site by one.
