Ok, first, let me start this with that I have fibromyalgia, myofascial pain syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos, psoriatic arthritis, osteoarthritis and my knee that for some reason, the kneecap is not in the right place (it's too far left) which means it hyperextends easily, so starting pilates was a big decision. It has turned out to be absolutely a fantastic decision — but that doesn't mean it's been a stroll in the park.
Since the beginning of January, I have been doing pilates. The relief of moving smoothly and the stretching has been amazing! The last time I went last week was my 22nd class. All off the prior went perfectly and I did not hurt myself. Last class, my hip and my knee overextended accidentally in separate exercises. My brain wasn't in the game because I was beyond exhausted and I probably should have skipped class. It was 100% my fault, I know my body's signals and I ignored it. I got home, took pain meds, showered hoping the heat would soothe my back and legs, then I went to bed for the rest of the day. I was in too much pain to even eat without feeling sick.
The next morning I could barely get out of bed, I even cried. I mean look at that list! Even with treatment, I'm in pain all the time. My pain tolerance is insane. If it made me cry, it's really bad! I massaged the best I could and found out my lower back is incredibly tender too. My parents brought over stuff like massage tools, lidocaine, etc. My mom helped me put on the lidocaine, I did some hip friendly stretching of my back, but I couldn't do much like I normally am able to. By the time they left, there was some relief from the massage tools, but the my muscles have tightened up from the pain again.
I don't need to see my doctor just for hyperextending, he knows all about my hypermobility and it happens way too often to be paying all those copays! This is not the first time it's happened to me, but this time it matters more as I don't want to hurt myself doing pilates. I love pilates way too much to give up on it and other than this, it has been perfect for getting back to a baseline level of fit while getting pain relief at the same time.
Has anyone else had this or a similar experience? Any advice?
