What's the best way to test to see if a labret piercing has closed?

Post Body

Background is that I got my labret pierced a decade ago, kept it for a few years but then went off it because it was slightly off centre. I took it out and waited hoping it would close so I could get it re-pierced, but then when I went into the piercing shop a few years later the guy took one look at me and said it was still open, and offered to prove to me by putting jewellery in. Lo and behold, he was right. After a year or two, it being off centre still bothered me and I was worried it was holding me back in work, so I took it out again. Now I'm gravitating towards trying it again for a while, but I tried putting jewellery in myself and just ended up hurting myself a lot. I think it's still open, like I at least still have the dimple from it and that seemed to be all the piercer needed to tell it was open years ago, but I'm not sure.

I'm wondering if there's a safe and easy way to tell. Not sure if I'll have time to go to a piercer any time soon.
