What kind of jewelry to use with a surface bar?

Pretty self explanatory. I have a surface piercing with the original jewelry (the staple bar) from when I got pierced (I have titanium discs) and I am starting to look for something more interesting. If I look up "surface bar jewelry" the choices are pretty limited to gems and cabochons which are not really my thing. However if I look up say, ends for dermal piercings, there are many more. Given the gauge is the same, would any threaded jewelry technically work?
