How can I make a flyer using paint or word? Details inside!

Hi there, I've recently been added to a tiny small charities 'emergency committee'. Basically they're an ex service men and womens club, with charity status, who have run out of money. Being one of the few members of the club under the age of 50 I've been assigned the task of making flyers up, for an upcoming fundraising night.

I have word, and paint, I've got a background that will do, but now trying to put the text/logos on I can't get them to have a transparent background!

If anyone could give me a few pointers I'd really appreciate it! I'm not cut out for this!!
