Hi everyone, I know this subreddit is small but I'm hoping there's some people here that can give me some advice.
I'm a 32 year old gigging musician (mainly bass & guitar) who practically makes his living $100-$200 a gig at a time, though I also work a part time job at a community college (not music related) and have a few guitar students. I don't "play" piano per se but I did take class piano when earning my Music degree in college and understand the instrument.
I've thought about piano tuning for years now as a good way to have some kind of side business under me and finally feel like I have a career and hopefully more stable work. I even went to a PTG meeting a few years back and everyone was really friendly, but life got busy with other stuff and I didn't follow up with it.
I'm ready to get serious about it now. I guess my first step should be reaching out to my local PTG chapter again? I'm also curious about schools and if they are worth my time...I can only do online since I'm nowhere near the in-person schools but I know there's The Piano Technician Academy, Randy Potter School, and Apex Piano Tuning. If anyone has information on these schools I'd love to learn more about them.
I know there's also the option of an apprenticeship, but does that really work in the real word - just randomly approaching a piano tuner and asking to work under them?
Finally - finding a piano to practice on. I don't own a piano and it would be difficult to make room in my home for one, though maybe not impossible. What avenues can I pursue to practice? Local churches maybe?
Thank you for your time.
