(UPDATE) i posted a couple of weeks ago about wanting to stop learning by ear and get a teacher after a year of being self taught.

Post Body

Although i have always loved piano, last year is when i finally started playing, and like most newbies i wanted to instantly start playing level 10 Etudes and nocturnes. Well… that worked for me sorta… i wont go into my progress. The entire time i knew that playing the piano was going to be something that i stick with for the rest of my life, and the way i was learning was not going to be sustainable long term. I needed to learn fingering, posture, theory, how to read sheet music, and much more to be the classical pianist that i envisioned myself to be.

So my last post was about me wanting to get a teacher, and i did. I had my first lesson last week and i feel like she understands my goals.

She sent me home with some simple sheet music like Ode the joy, and some scales to play. Since than i have gone down the rabbit hole on music theory just by trying to figure out what some of these symbols were in my sheet music. I ended up learning everything from what key signatures are, and diferentes note names, and mesures. I mean.. i have a few pages of notes that i took down in the past few days, and to be honest, i have had more fun learning theory than playing haha, but…. when i do sit down to play, i am abbe to decipher the notes on the staff faster and understand things a tad bit more.

Im posting because when i started playing a year ago i knew that sheet music wasn’t for me and that i could beat the system, and now just after 1 week of lessons, and some self learning. I feel pretty confident going forward.

Im sure my teacher will be surprised by my progress. I am 30 years old and i told her my goal is to start at grade 1 and work my way up, and along the way perform in some recitals. Over the past few weeks i decided to treat my piano learning like a collage corse, so im excited to see true consistent progress over the months.

(OBVIOUSLY I HAVE A LONG WAYS TO GO. JUST POSTING A WEEK UPDATE FROM LAST POST )
