Hi, Current PA student here. I’m currently taking pediatrics, and I’m so stuck on this pediatric dosing question. I emailed my professor about it and did not get any better understanding. So I’m hoping someone here who works with peds could help me understand what I need to do here. The question is: You are treating pneumonia in a 7 yr old weighing 160 lbs. using Amox/Clav (600mg/42.9mg) /5mL, what is the appropriate single dose if given BID? Hint: pay attention to max dosing.
SO.. I know the max dose is 4 grams. I converted his weight to kg, and per my professors instruction, found the dosing on medscape. Which he would exceed the 4 grams. It also says that children >40 kg dose according to adult recommendations.. So going over to adult recommendations.. it then splits it to mild to moderate or severe lower respiratory tract infection. Mild to moderate is 500/125 mg PO q12 and Severe is 875/125 mg PO q12 hr
What do I do from here? I’ve asked several of my classmates and we’re all kind of getting different answers and ways to solve it.. so Id just like to know whAt the correct next step to take is! Gahhh! Thanks!
