Psych PA's what is your quality of life? How is your work/life balance? I am looking for a low stress job that doesn't require me to bring work home. I also want to go on vacation without coming back to a ton of work. I currently work in GI and I want out (I will clarify that I think some GI jobs can be great in terms of work/life balance, but mine is not).
I’ve worked in psych for 5 years. I’ve been in outpatient, interventional, and post-acute care. I’m negotiating for an inpatient job now. I think psych is 50/50 and that depends primarily on your facility and management. My outpatient job was actually really stressful because patients were always messaging on our portal, and it’s my job to have them answered in 48 hours. You never know when someone would message with suicidal ideation. Post-acute care you are stressed out all the time due to charting and dealing with patients and/or their families, but the pay can be amazing. I do think inpatient is better because you’re only stressed out while you’re at work, but I also heard to be prepared to protect yourself, if possible. I honestly really want to get into research psych (not MLS) or corrections (jail not prison) due to their reported benefits. Also regardless of facility, you have to be okay with patients who are manipulative, condescending, argumentative, etc. You will always have these patients in psych.
