Anchor Point Alignment Problem

I want to vertically align two selected anchor points in a path, and others later, but the align panel is grayed out when set to Selection. If I select align by Canvas, it's not grayed out, but it just aligns the entire path to the center of the canvas, not just the two selected anchor points to each other. My level of frustration is, let us say, high.
I just noticed images are not allowed in this sub. Weird.
