I'm an amateur working on a project to study physical photos and how film prints degrade over time. Trying to both understand how to preserve some of my parent's old prints as well as work on some art projects that require aging some photos. I was wondering if anyone had a lot of experience with the chemical effects of aging and time on photos or had some resources they could share about it.
In my research, the best source I found for it is this blogger article from way back in 2008. Back then they couldn't find a lot of material written on the subject and I doubt 15 years of iPhone cameras means a lot of open-source research has been invested into studying the aging of print photos.
UV degradation and heat seem like the main culprits for most film chemistries but I was wondering if anyone in this community is heavily involved in photo restoration or had any tips or tricks. I liked the bloggers ideas for using an oven for the heat, and in the intervening years, UV lights have become silly cheap. Hoping I can find a way to really replicate some of the chemical damage of aging as well.
